In term 1, the Kindergarten students will build upon the motor skills and movement they developed last year such as kicking, running, hopping, galloping, sliding and skipping. They will also touch on soccer and running, as they are expected to be able to tap the ball, sending it forward leading up to kicking, passing and dribbling in the years to come. A large focus will be placed on exhibiting acceptance of self and others in physical activities as well as building on teamwork and sportsmanship. They will also spend some time each week in the pool, where they will be expected to progress through the various stages of our swimming program. Kicking, body control, blowing bubbles and comfort in the water are all areas in which the kinderstars are expected to show improvement in.
In term 2, the Kindergarten students will continue to develop their motor skills and movement while starting to explore net games and using rackets. Light weight balls will be used for volleying and striking with paddles and rackets.
In term 3, the Kindergarten students will learn about good health, jumping strategies and games that require different locomotor skills. They will be expected to recognize that physical activity is important for good health. They will also work on front and back as well as lateral jumping strategies. Finally they will explore various games that use different manipulatives and movements.
In term 4, the Kindergarten students will focus on ball games, movement, beats and rhythm. They will be expected to be able to bounce a ball and catch it and hopefully progress on to bouncing the ball multiple times. They will also need to be able to pass a light ball between friends without having it touch the ground. They will explore ribbons and express themselves in the form of dance with those ribbons. They will learn to be creative with their movement as they listen to different rhythms.
In term 5, the kindergarten students will continue to focus on motor skills and movement as well as throwing and catching. They will also take all of the skills and techniques learned throughout the year and apply them in our track and field unit. They will not be ready for all of the events just yet, but they will still attempt a 30 meter run, high jump, ball throw and mini hurdles.
